Miami Medical: A Brief Actor QnA With Jeffrey Lieber

13 May

There seem to be a lot of familiar faces, actor wise, in Miami Medical.

Jonathan Runyon, who plays Paramedic Kleebus, was also on Criminal Minds in 2006 as Dan Ash.

And James Frain who plays Thomas Cromwell the Tudors — which Jeremy Northam was also in — appears in Friday’s episode, Man on the Road.

Then there’s Kari Matchett, who plays heart surgeon Helena Sable on Miami Medical. She was in Cypher with Northam.

Curiosity finally got the best of me as to how this happens, so I decided to ask Executive Producer Jeffrey Lieber if he could tell us a little about how the process works. Here’s what he said:

Is there a stable of actors owned by particular studios that producers can choose from? Or how do these connections happen?

No stable of actors and we often don’t even know about past crossings until AFTER we’ve finalized the cast.

Do the actors sometimes suggest their friends from other shows for roles or are these connections just sort of weird coincidences?

James Frain just came in and BLEW US AWAY. Fantastic. I actually had another actor in mind for the part, but when we saw James the deal was done.

We also didn’t realize Kari Matchett and Jeremy had worked together. Happily they had good chemistry and really liked collaborating, so it worked out well.

Any other insights you can give us into how that process works?

Good casting directors are the key. They know where to find the great actors… behind the fridge… in the garden… under a shell on the beach. We had Liz Barnes and her success rate was in the 90% rate. We had three actors all season (zips mouth and walks away) that didn’t really bring it and given how many people we cast… that’s quite a feat.

Don’t forget to check out Frain and Matchett in Friday’s episode, Man on the Road. Here’s the promo:

I’m also really looking forward to learning more about the mysterious past of Doctor Proctor (played by Northam), who apparently flashes back to it all in Friday’s episode.

What happened to Doc Proc? We can cross off at least one possibility. He wasn’t impaled by a meteorite, according to Lieber

Here’s the CBS promo for Friday’s episode, Man On The Road:
